Responsibilities Organizes and evaluates patient medical records on paper and electronically. Reviews medical records, charts, and documents for accuracy and completeness. Makes corrections as needed. Files medical records, reports, and other HIM documents. Responds to requests from hospital staff, patients, and physicians. Compiles data and prepares reports. Abstracts and codes clinical data using standard classification systems. Pulls and copies charts. Requests reports and medical documents. May be assigned to one or more specialized areas, such as archiving, release of information, reanalysis, emergency department, discharge, admissions/outpatient, or birth registration. Specific duties vary based on area of assignment. May assist in areas that are not primary assignment. Maintains highest level of confidentiality regarding patient health information. Education Requirements Associate's degree, preferably in a clinical or administrative field. If no degree, equivalent experience (1 year of experience = 1 year of college) will be considered. Minimum Experience, Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements Health Information Management Technician 1: Beginning level handles routine work and problems. Medical records and administrative/clerical experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred. Good keyboarding and PC skills with accuracy at least 35 wpm. Good written and verbal communication skills. |
